In the late 1880s, J.K. Starley, a British inventor, brought the first two-wheeled bike to mass market. By 1888, John Dunlop had invented pneumatic tires by filling tubes with compressed air and three years later, Edouard Michelin designed the detachable tire allowing for easy repair. Together, these inventions laid the groundwork for the pragmatic “safety” bicycle as we know it today.
